CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES Aggregate i n c r e a s e s of $99,000,000 in loans and investments and of $162,000,000 in Government d e p o s i t s , as against r e d u c t i o n s of $149,000,000 i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s and of $69,000,000 in r e s e r v e balances with t h e Federal r e s e r v e banks, a r e shown in the weekly c o n s o l i d a t e d statement of c o n d i t i o n on December 19 of 7°4 member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s . Loans and d i s c o u n t s increased by $38,000,000, i n crease# o,f $b2,000,000 in loans on c o r p o r a t e stocks and bonds and of $1,000,000 i n loans on U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s , being o f f s e t i n p a r t by a r e d u c t i o n of *$25,000,000 i n a l l o t h e r , l a r g e l y commercial, loans and d i s c o u n t s . Investments of a l l r e p o r t i n g members increased by $61,000,000, c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness showing an i n c r e a s e of $48,000,000 and c o r p o r a t e bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s - an i n c r e a s e of $17,000,000, w h i l e h o l d i n g s of U. S. bonds and. Treasury n o t e s show a r e d u c t i o n of $4,000,000. Loans and d i s c o u n t s of r e p o r t i n g banks i n New York City show an i n c r e a s e of $38,000,000, loans secured by c o r p o r a t e stocks and bonds - an i n c r e a s e of $56,000,000, loans secured by U. S. Government o b l i g a t i o n s - an i n c r e a s e of $2,000,000, and a l l o t h e r , l a r g e l y commercial, loans and d i s c o u n t s - a^decrease of $20,000,000. Investments of t h e New York City banks increased by $15,000,000, U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s - by $3,000,000 and other bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s - by ' $12,000,000- f Net demand d e p o s i t s of a l l r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s show a r e d u c t i o n of $149,000,000, of which $35,000,000 i s shown f o r t h e New York d i s t r i c t , $29,000,000 f o r the Chicago d i s t r i c t , $21,000,000 f o r the Cleveland d i s t r i c t and $16,000,000 f o r the P h i l a d e l p h i a d i s t r i c t . Time d e p o s i t s of a l l r e p o r t i n g oanks decreased by $1,000,000. Government d e p o s i t s , cn aocount cf Treasury r a t i o n s , including the payment of income and p r o f i t s t a x e s and the issue and redemption of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s show a net i n c r e a s e of $162,000,000 f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks, t h e New York City banks r e p o r t i n g an i n c r e a s e of $47,000,000. Reserve balances of a l l r e p o r t i n g banks a t t h e Federal r e s e r v e banks declined by $69,000,000, while cash in v a u l t increased $14,000,000. Member oanks i n New York C i t y r e p o r t r e d u c t i o n s of $46,000,000 in r e s e r v e balances and of $4,000,000 in c a s h . Borrowings of a l l r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s from the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks declined from $485,000,000 t o $470,000,000 or from 3. t o 2.9 p e r cent of t h e i r t o t a l loans and investments. Borrowings of t h e New York City members decreased from $74,000,000 to ' $54,000,000 or from 1.5 t o 1 . 1 p e r c e n t of t h e i r t o t a l l o a n s and investments.
