H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) December 26, 1956 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 19: Increases of $445 million in commercial and industrial loans, $621 million in holdings of Treasury bills, and $1,187 million in United States Government deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased $218 million in New York City, $79 million in the Chicago District, and by smaller amounts in all other districts. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans tc brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities increased $131 million, of which $112 million was in New York City. Holdings of Treasury bills increased in nearly all districts, reflecting the sale of the special issue of Treasury bills. Holdings of "other" securities decreased $46 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $108 million in New York City, $60 million in the Chicago District, and $52 million in the Cleveland District, but they increased $60 million in the Atlanta District, $46 million in the Philadelphia District, and $38 million in the Boston District; there was a net decrease of $129 million at all reporting member banks. Time deposits increased $43 million. Demand deposits credited to domestic banks increased $375 million. Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $26l million and borrowings from other decreased $55 million. Loans to banks decreased $192 million.
