CONDITIO# OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading c i t i e s
shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended December 19$ Increases of
$574 million in loans, $467 million i n holdings of United S t a t e s Government s e c u r i t i e s , $456 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Bantcs, $393 million i n
demand deposits a d j u s t e d , $813 million i n United States Government deposits, and
$317 million i n demand deposits credited to domestic banks.
Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans increased in a l l but two d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l of $223 million a t a l l reporting member banks. Loans to manuf a c t u r e r s of food, l i q u o r , and tobacco and of metals and metal products, to commodity d e a l e r s , and to s a l e s finance companies a l l showed s u b s t a n t i a l increases.
These changes according to industry of borrower are preliminary; a complete analysis
w i l l be available in another press r e l e a s e l a t e r . Loans f o r purchasing or carrying
United States Government and other s e c u r i t i e s increased $ l 4 l m i l l i o n . Loans to
banks increased $L9h m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased i n most d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l of $479
million. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness increased $616 million
and holdings of United States Government bonds decreased $632 million, p a r t i a l l y
r e f l e c t i n g the exchange of bonds c a l l e d f o r redemption f o r a new c e r t i f i c a t e i s s u e .
Holdings of "other s e c u r i t i e s " increased $32 m i l l i o n .
Demand deposits adjusted increased $271 million in New York City, $107 million
i n the Cleveland D i s t r i c t , $81 million in the Boston D i s t r i c t , and $71 million in
the Philadelphia D i s t r i c t , but they decreased $109 million in the San Francisco
D i s t r i c t and $82 million i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t .
