CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 17: Increases
of $824 million in loans adjusted, #482 million in demand deposits adjusted, and
$674 million in U, S. Government deposits.
Commercial and industrial loons increased in all but one district and a
total of 1382 million at all reporting member banks; the principal increases were
$230 million in New York City, S36 million in the Chicago District, $35 million
in the Cleveland District, and $17 million in the St. Louis District, This week's
increase included loans for quarterly tax date needs. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U, S, Government and other securities increased $348 million.
Real estate loans increased $34 million. "Other" loans increased $51 million.
Holdings of Treasury bills increased $77 million and holdings of U, S.
Government bonds decreased $35 million.
Demand deposits adjusted increased $139 million in the Kansas City District,
$80 million in the Boston District, $60 million in the Atlanta District, $57
million in the Dallas District, and $56 million in the Richmond District. Demand
deposits credited to domestic banks increased $561 million at all reporting mem™
ber banks.
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $128 million and borrowings
from others decreased $282 million. Loans to banks decreased $231 million,
