BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM H,4,2 (For Immediate Release) December 17, 1958 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 10: An increase of $354 million in loans adjusted; decreases of $272 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities and $1,394 million in U. S. Government deposits; and an increase of $1,644 million in demand deposits adjusted. Commercial and industrial loans increased $126 million at all reporting member banks; the principal increases were $38 million in New York City, $32 million in Chicago, $26 million in the Boston District, and $16 million in the San Francisco District, Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U, S, Government and other securities increased $174 million. Real estate loans increased $34 million. Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $110 million in New York City, $81 million in Chicago, and a total of $278 million at all reporting member banks. Holdings of "other" securities increased $122 million of which $104 million was in New York City. Demand deposits adjusted increased $791 million in New York City, $289 million in the San Francisco District, $130 million in Chicago, $82 million in the Kansas City District, and by smaller amounts in all of the other districts. Time deposits increased $53 million in New York City and a total of $84 million at all reporting member banks, U, S # Government deposits decreased, in all districts, Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $76 million and borrowings from others decreased $107 million.
