H,4,2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF frffi FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Releas^) December 12, 1956 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading c i t i e s shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 5$ An increase of $261 million in loans adjusted; decreases of S321 million i n holdings of United States Government securities and $791 million in United States Government deposits; and an increase of $245 million in borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks. Commercial and industrial loans increased $37 million in the San Francisco District, $14 million in the New York District, $12 million in Chicago and a t o t a l of $84 million at a l l reporting member banks. Changes according t o industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other s e c u r i t i e s increased $156 million, "Other" loans increased $47 million. All categories of holdings of United States Government securities decreased, with Treasury b i l l s decreasing $116 million, Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness $42 million, Treasury notes $95 million, and United States Government bonds $68 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased $264 million in New York City and $55 mill i o n in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , but they decreased $59 million in the Chicago District and $45 million i n the Kansas City D i s t r i c t ; there was a net increase of $113 million at a l l reporting member banks.
