F E D E R A L statistical R E S E R V E release For immediate r e l e a s e August 9, 1961 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES H.4.2 The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows the f o l l o w i n g p r i n c i p a l changes for the week ended August 2: ^ An increase of $228 m i l l i o n in loans adjusted; decreases of $274 m i l l i o n in holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s , $270 m i l l i o n in balances with domestic banks, and $978 m i l l i o n in demand d e p o s i t s adjusted; and an increase of $428 m i l l i o n in demand d e p o s i t s credited t o domestic banks. Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased in most d i s t r i c t s and a net of $157 m i l l i o n , as compared with a net increase of $123 m i l l i o n during the comparable week a year ago. Agricultural loans decreased $77 m i l l i o n , of which $6l m i l l i o n was in the Kansas City D i s t r i c t . Loans t o brokers and dealers f o r purchasing or carrying U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s decreased $80 m i l l i o n . , Loans t o s a l e s finance, personal finance i n s t i t u t i o n s , e t c . increased $198 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans increased $29 mil- lion. Holdings of Treasury b i l l s decreased $195 m i l l i o n . Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s decreased $946 m i l l i o n and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds increased :I367 m i l l i o n , l a r g e l y r e f l e c t i n g exchanges f o r new notes incident t o the Treasury's August 1 r e f i n a n c i n g . Demand d e p o s i t s adjusted decreased in a l l d i s t r i c t s except in the Philadelphia D i s t r i c t . Time and savings d e p o s i t s increased $85 m i l l i o n .
