H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) August 7, 1957 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended July 31: Increases of $71 million in loans adjusted and $161 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks. Commercial and industrial loans decreased $45 million at all reporting member banks; the principal changes were decreases of $80 million in New York City, $23 million in Chicago, $16 million in the San Francisco District, $13 million in the Cleveland District, and $12 million in the Philadelphia District, and an increase of $115 million in the New York District outside of New York City, Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying securities increased $52 million, "Other" loans increased $60 million. Holdings of Treasury bills and of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $23 million and $15 million, respectively; and holdings of U, S, Government bonds decreased $24 million. Holdings of "other" securities increased $31 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $66 million in New York City and $41 million in the San Francisco District, but they increased $88 million in the Chicago District; there was a net decrease of $15 million at all reporting member banks., U, S, Government deposits increased $44 million. Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks were practically unchanged, and borrowings from others decreased $144 million. Loans to banks decreased $103 million. Capital accounts increased $154 million at all reporting member banks, of which $138 million was in New York City largely reflecting a sale of additional stock at one bank.
