Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in Leading C i t i e s
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading c i t i e s
shows the f o l l o w i n g p r i n c i p a l changes for the week ended August 1$ Decreases of
$312,000,000 in holdings of United States Government o b l i g a t i o n s and $436,000,000
in United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s , and an increase of $147,000,000 in borrowings
Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans increased $23,000,000, Loans
for purchasing or carrying United States Government o b l i g a t i o n s decreased, and
loans for purchasing or carrying other s e c u r i t i e s increased.
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s declined in a l l d i s t r i c t s , and the t o t a l decrease
was $257,000,000# Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness and of
Treasury notes declined $22,000,000 and $67,000,000, r e s p e c t i v e l y . Holdings of
United S t a t e s Government bonds increased $34,000,000. Holdings of "other s e c u r i t i e s " increased in a l l d i s t r i c t s and the t o t a l increase was $102,000,000.
Demand d e p o s i t s adjusted increased $155,000,000 in New York City and
$93,000,000 a t a l l reporting member banks. Time d e p o s i t s increased $63,000,000.
United States Government deposits declined in a l l d i s t r i c t s .
Deposits c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks declined $62,000,000 in New York City and
$86,000,000 a t a l l reporting member banks.
Borrowings of reporting member banks increased $147,000,000 during t h e week,
and on August 1 amounted t o $381,000,000.
