CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES. Continued loan l i q u i d a t i o n , aggregating $67,000,000, as against a f u r t h e r increase of $59,000,000 of investments, largely i n corporate s e c u r i t i e s , accompanied by s u b s t a n t i a l reductions i n demand deposits, reserve balances and borrowings from the Federal reserve banks, i s indicated i n the Federal Reserve Board's weekly statement of condition on July 26 of 79^ member banks in leading c i t i e s * Loans and discounts of member banks i n New York City show a reduction of $78,000,000, of which $61,000,000 represents the reduction of loans secured by corporate o b l i gations and $17,000,000 - the reduction of other loans and discounts, largely loans of a commercial character. Investments of the reporting banks i n U. S. bonds show an increase f o r the week of $20,000,000, while holdings of other Government s e c u r i t i e s declined by $2,000,000. For member banks in New York City an increase of $7,000,000 in U, S» bonds and of $3,000,000 i n other Government s e c u r i t i e s i s noted. As against the s u b s t a n t i a l l i q u i d a t i o n of loans secured by corporate s e c u r i t i e s , bank investments in these s e c u r i t i e s show an increase of $41,000,000, the greater p a r t outside of New York City. Total loans and investments of the reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s declined by $8,000,000 and those of the New York banks- by $54,000,000. As against a nominal decline in Government deposits and a reduction of $58,000,000 i n other demand deposits ($56,000,000 in New York City) time deposits show a f u r t h e r gain of $28,000,000 ($19,000,000 in New York City). Borrowings of the reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s from the Federal reserve banks show, a reduction f o r the week from $158,000,000 to $98,000,000, or from 1 to 0.6 per cent of t h e i r combined loans and investments. For the New York City banks a reduction from $72,000,000 to $10,000,000 in borrowings from the local reserve bank and from 1.4 to 0.2 per cent in the r a t i o of these borrowings to t o t a l loans and investments i s noted. Reserve balances of the reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s show a decline f o r the week of $46,000,000, while cash i n vault f e l l off $8,000,000. Member banks in New York City r e p o r t a decrease of $24,000,000 in reserve balances and a nominal i n crease in cash on hand.
