CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e S
shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended August 20: An increase
of $219 million i n loans adjusted; decreases of $368 million i n holdings of U. S.
Government s e c u r i t i e s , $261 million in demand deposits adjusted-, $530 million in
demand deposits credited t o domestic banks; and an increase of §275 million i n
U, S, Government d e p o s i t s .
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased in a l l but one d i s t r i c t and a t o t a l
of #237 million a t a l l reporting member banks. The p r i n c i p a l changes were $84
million i n New York City, $67 million i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and $33
million in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , Changes according t o industry appear i n another
press release.
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s decreased $179 million of which $154 million was
i n New York City, Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness decreased $91
million a t a l l reporting member banks.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased $117 million i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t ,
$80 million i n the New York D i s t r i c t , $56 million in the Richmond D i s t r i c t , but
they increased $48 million i n the Kansas City D i s t r i c t . Time deposits decreased
#54 million.
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $91 million and borrowings
from others decreased $240 million. Loans to banks decreased $301 million,
