CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
Net w i t h d r a w a l s of $139,000,000 of Government d e p o s i t s i n c o n n e c t i o n
w i t h the redemption by the Treasury on August 15 of t h e o u t s t a n d i n g b a l a n c e
of $136,000,000 of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s m a t u r i n g on t h a t d a t e , accompanied
by f u r t h e r l i q u i d a t i o n of $52,000,000 of l o a n s and by d e c r e a s e d borrowings
from the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks, a r e i n d i c a t e d by t h e F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s
c o n s o l i d a t e d weekly s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n on August 17 of 812 member banks
in leading c i t i e s .
Member bank l o a n s s e c u r e d by U.S. Government o b l i g a t i o n s show an i n c r e a s e of $5,000,000 f o r the week, w h i l e l o a n s secured by s t o c k s and bonds
d e c l i n e d by $16,000,000, and a l l o t h e r l o a n s , l a r g e l y of a conmercial
n a t u r e , - by $ 4 l , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 . For the member banks i n New York City an i n c r e a s e of $10,000,000 i n l o a n s secured by Government o b l i g a t i o n s and a d e c r e a s e of $31,000,000 i n l o a n s secured by s t o c k s and bonds a r e noted. Holdings of U. S. bonds and V i c t o r y n o t e s d e c l i n e d by about $2,000,000 t those
of Treasury n o t e s by about $3,000,000 and those of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e d , by
$4?,000,000, w h i l e c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s show a r e d u c t i o n of about $3>000,000.
For t h e New York C i t y banks, d e c r e a s e s of $2,000,000 i n U. S. bonds and of
$3.6,000,000 i n c e r t i f i c a t e s of i n d e b t e d n e s s a r e shown.
As a consequence of t h e s e changes, t o t a l l o a n s and investments of a l l
r e p o r t i n g banks show a d e c r e a s e f o r t h e w^ek of $106,000,000, w h i l e those
Of t h e New York City banks d e c l i n e d by $39«000,000.
Accommodation of the r e p o r t i n g banks a t the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks shows
a f u r t h e r d e c r e a s e f o r t h e week frem $997»©00,000 to $979»000,000, or from
6-7 p e r c e n t to 6 . 6 p e r c e n t of the banks 1 t o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s . For
the New York City banks a d e c r e a s e from $273>000,000 to $255>000,000 i n the
t o t a l borrowings from t h e l o c a l r e s e r v e bank, and from 5 . 8 p e r c e n t to 5*5
per c e n t i n the r a t i o of accommodation i s shown.
As a g a i n s t a d e c r e a s e of $139<000,000 i # Government d e p o s i t s , o t h e r
demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) show an i n c r e a s e of $43,000,000, and time d e p o s i t s a n
i n c r e a s e of $1,000,000, t h e s e i n c r e a s e s a p p a r e n t l y r e p r e s e n t i n g c h i e f l y a
t r a n s f e r of f u n d s from' Government account to t h o s e of i n d i v i d u a l and c o r p o r a t e
i n v e s t o r s i n the Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s which were redeemed on August 15* At
t h e New York City banks Government d e p o s i t s decreasedby $67,000,000, w h i l e
o t h e r demand d e p o s i t s i n c r e a s e d by $20,000,000, and time deposits, remained
unchanged. The r e l a t i v e l y s m a l l e r i n c r e a s e i n t h e demand d e p o s i t s of New York
member banks may be due i n p a r t to withdrawals of d e p o s i t s by country c o r r e s pondents.
Reserve b a l a n c e s with the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks show a n i n c r e a s e of
$16,000,000 f o r t h e week, w h i l e cash i n v a u l t d e c l i n e d by $12,000,000. For
the New York C i t y banks d e c r e a s e s of $1,000,000 i n r e s e r v e s w i t h the l o c a l
F e d e r a l r e s e r v e bank and of $5,000,000 i n c a s h a r e n o t e d .
