STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System August 24, 1936 For immediate r e l e a s e Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks i n 101 Leading C i t i e s The condition statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks in 101 l e a d i n g c i t i e s on August 19 shows a decrease f o r the week of $68,000,000 in t o t a l loans and i n vestments, ail i n c r e a s e of $29,000,000 in r e s e r v e "balances with Federal Reserve banks, an i n c r e a s e of $42,000,000 i n demand d e p o s i t s - a d j u s t e d , and decreases of $120,000,000 i n balances with domestic banks and of $208,000,000 in d e p o s i t balances standing to the c r e d i t of domestic banks. Loans to b r o k e r s and d e a l e r s in Hew York declined $6,000,000, loans to brokers and d e a l e r s o u t s i d e New York declined $5,000,000, and loans on s e c u r i t i e s to others (except banks) i n c r e a s e d $5,000,000, Holdings of acceptances and commercial paper bought increased $2,000,000; loans to banks declined $1,000,000; and tt -0ther loans" increased $16,000,000 i n the New York d i s t r i c t , $9,000,000 i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t and $22,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks, and declined $6,000,000 in the San Francisco d i s t r i c t . Holdings of United S t a t e s Government d i r e c t o b l i g a t i o n s declined $45,000,000 i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t and $48,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks.
