R. 284 STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System August 2, 1943 For immediate r e l e a s e Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in Leading C i t i e s The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading c i t i e s shows the following principal changes for the week ended July 281 Decreases of $284,000,000 in holdings of Treasury b i l l s , $568,000,000 in United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s , and $20),000,000 in deposits credited to domestic banks, and an increase of $1*53,000,000 ill demand deposits-adjusted. Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and agricultural loans increased $10,000,000. Loans t o brokers and dealers in s e c u r i t i e s increased $35,000,000 in New York City, and $44,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury b i l l s declined $153#000,000 in New York City,$33,000,000 i n . t h e Boston D i s t r i c t , $21*,000,000 in the Philadelphia D i s t r i c t , and $284,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness increased $21,000,000 in New York City, $11,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and $44,000,009 at a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of United S t a t e s Government bonds increased $65,000,000 in New York City and $80*000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. Demand deposits-adjusted increased $263,000,000 in New York City, $96,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and $453>000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. United States Government d e p o s i t s declined in a l l d i s t r i c t s , the principal decreases being $251,000,000 in New York City and $81,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t ; the t o t a l decrease at a l l reporting member banks was $568,000,000.
