CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n leading c i t i e s
shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended August 10: Decreases of
$31*1 m i l l i o n i n holdings of United S t a t e s Government s e c u r i t i e s , $370 m i l l i o n in
reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $220 m i l l i o n i n demand deposits adj u s t e d , and $31*0 m i l l i o n i n United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s .
Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans increased i n a l l but one d i s t r i c t , and a t o t a l of $20l* m i l l i o n a t a l l reporting member banksj the p r i n c i p a l
changes were i n c r e a s e s of $80 m i l l i o n i n New York City, $52 m i l l i o n in the Chicago
D i s t r i c t , $23 m i l l i o n i n t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $15 m i l l i o n i n the Cleveland
D i s t r i c t , and $12 m i l l i o n i n t h e Boston D i s t r i c t . Changes according t o i n d u s t r y
appear i n another p r e s s r e l e a s e . Loans t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing or
carrying United S t a t e s Government and other s e c u r i t i e s decreased $217 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s and
c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness decreased $37
m i l l i o n and $119 m i l l i o n , r e s p e c t i v e l y . Holdings of Treasury notes decreased $77
m i l l i o n i n Chicago, $1*2 m i l l i o n i n the Cleveland D i s t r i c t , and a t o t a l of $ l 6 l m i l l i o n . Holdings of United S t a t e s Government bonds decreased $2l* m i l l i o n ; t h e p r i n c i p a l changes were a decrease of $68 m i l l i o n i n New York City and an increase of
$71* m i l l i o n i n Chicago. Holdings of "other" s e c u r i t i e s decreased $172 m i l l i o n , of
which $59 m i l l i o n was i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t and $51 m i l l i o n i n New York City.
Demand deposits a d j u s t e d decreased $237 m i l l i o n i n New York City and $1*3 m i l l i o n i n the Boston D i s t r i c t , but they increased by small amounts i n seven d i s t r i c t s .
Demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks increased $138 m i l l i o n .
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $1+07 m i l l i o n , but borrowings
from others increased $200 m i l l i o n . Loans t o banks increased $135 m i l l i o n .
