CONDITION OF MEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e s
shows t h e following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e weak ended August 8: Decreases of
$111 m i l l i o n in loans a d j u s t e d , $153 m i l l i o n in holdings of United S t a t e s Government s e c u r i t i e s , $lkO m i l l i o n i n balances with domestic banks, $128 m i l l i o n in
demand deposits a d j u s t e d , and $71k m i l l i o n in United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s ,
and an i n c r e a s e of $255 m i l l i o n i n borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks.
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans decreased $9 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member
banks; the p r i n c i p a l changes were a decrease of $30 m i l l i o n i n New York City and
increases of $9 m i l l i o n each in the Boston and Atlanta D i s t r i c t s . Changes according
to i n d u s t r y appear in another press r e l e a s e . Loans to brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing o r carrying United S t a t e s Government and o t h e r s e c u r i t i e s decreased $127
m i l l i o n . "Other" loans increased $22 m i l l i o n .
All c a t e g o r i e s of holdings of United S t a t e s Government s e c u r i t i e s decreased,
with Treasury b i l l s decreasing $63 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness
$25 m i l l i o n , Treasury notes $lk m i l l i o n , and United S t a t e s Government bonds $51
m i l l i o n . Holdings of "other" s e c u r i t i e s increased $57 m i l l i o n .
Demand deposits a d j u s t e d decreased in ten D i s t r i c t s ; t h e p r i n c i p a l changes
were decreases of $k9 m i l l i o n in the Chicago D i s t r i c t and £39 m i l l i o n in t h e S t .
Louis D i s t r i c t , and an i n c r e a s e of $77 m i l l i o n in New York City*
