BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM a.U.2 (For Immediate Release) A p r i l 7 , 1948 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The c o n d i t i o n statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows t h e following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e week ended March 31: Decreases of $1,0)6,000,000 i n holdings of United S t a t e s Government s e c u r i t i e s and $1,051,000,000 i n demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d . Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans decreased $19,000,000 i n New York C i t y , $8,000,000 each i n the Boston, Cleveland, and Chicago D i s t r i c t s , and $67,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Loans f o r purchasing or carrying United States Government and o t h e r s e c u r i t i e s increased $106,000,000, l a r g e l y i n New York City. "Other loans" increased $27,000,000* Holdings of Treasury b i l l s decreased $306,000,000 i n the City of Chicago, $279,000,000 i n New York C i t y and $658,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness decreased $96,000,000 i n t h e Chicago D i s t r i c t , $24,000,000 i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and $162,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t ing member banks. Holdings of Treasury notes decreased $121*,000,000 i n t h e C i t y of Chicago and $162,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Holdings of United S t a t e s Government bonds decreased $54,000,000. Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d decreased $956,000,000 i n the City of Chicago and $1,051,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Time deposits decreased $17,000,000. United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s increased $143,000,000. Demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks increased $197,000,000 i n the City of Chicago, and decreased $182,000,000 i n New York C i t y and by smaller amounts i n most of t h e other d i s t r i c t s ; t h e n e t decrease was $188,000,000. Borrowings decreased $129,000,000 in New York C i t y and $62,000,000 a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks, and increased $66,000,000 in t h e City of Chicago.
