CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended April 22: Decreases of
#308 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $765 million in United
States Government deposits, and $558 million in demand deposits credited to domestic
banks, and an increase of 6355 million in demand deposits adjusted.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans decreased in most districts and
a total of $131 million at all reporting member banks; the principal decreases were
S5U million in New York City, ยง27 million in the San Francisco District, $19 million
in the Kansas City District, and $13 million in the Chicago District* Changes
according to industry appear in another press release* . Loans to brokers and dealers
for purchasing or carrying securities decreased $11*1* million.
Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $58 million in Chicago, # 1 million in
New York City, #38 million in the Richmond District, and by smaller amounts in most
of the other districts; the net decrease was $173 million. Holdings of Treasury
certificates of indebtedness decreased $21 million in New York City and a total
of S53 million at all reporting member banks. Holdings of "other securities"
decreased #58 million, of which $55 million was in New York City,
Demand deposits adjusted increased $193 million in the New York District, $56
million in the Cleveland District, $53 million in the Atlanta District, and $1*1 million in the Dallas District, and they decreased $1*5 million in Chicago, . Time deposits increased $36 million.
Borrowings increased in most districts but they decreased $192 million in
New York City; the net increase at all reporting member banks was $12 million.
