STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS Released f o r p u b l i c a t i o n Monday morning, A p r i l 26, 1920; not earlier St.1111 F e d e r a l Reserve Board A p r i l 24, 1920 CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES Additions of over 200 m i l l i o n s to loans and investments and corresponding i n c r e a s e s in d e p o s i t s are i n d i c a t e d by the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s statement of c o n d i t i o n on A p r i l l6 of 811 member banks i n l e a d ing c i t i e s , The s t a t e m e n t shows an i n c r e a s e of 130.2 m i l l i o n s i n Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e holdings, in connection with the i s s u e of two new s e r i e s of c e r t i f i c a t e s , and i n c r e a s e s of about 3 m i l l i o n s i n United S t a t e s bonds, and of 1 #9 m i l l i o n s i n Victory n o t e s on hand. Loans secured by United S t a t e s Government o b l i g a t i o n s d e c l i n e d by 10 »2 m i l l i o n s ; loans secured by stocks and bonds show an i n c r e a s e of about 37 m i l l i o n s , the member banks in New York City r e p o r t i n g an i n c r e a s e under t h i s head of 3 1 ' 1 m i l l i o n s . A l l other loans and i n v e s t m e n t s i n c r e a s e d by 42*6 m i l l i o n s , a l l c l a s s e s of r e p o r t i n g banks p a r t i c i p a t i n g in the increase, Total loans and investments of a l l r e p o r t i n g banks show an i n c r e a s e of 204»5 m i l l i o n s , of which 130*2 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s the i n c r e a s e r e p o r t e d by the member banks i n New York C i t y , In connection w i t h these i n c r e a s e s , accommodation a t the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks snows an i n c r e a s e f o r the week of 44,5 m i l l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and of 3,6 m i l l i o n s f o r the New York City members. War paper held under discount f o r r e p o r t i n g members by the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks shows an i n c r e a s e f o r the week from 1,l64*7 to 1,190.3 m i l l i o n s , while o t h e r discounted paper so held i n c r e a s e d from S44.2 t o 863+1 m i l l i o n s . Following s u b s c r i p t i o n s t o the two new s e r i e s of loan c e r t i f i c a t e s , the banks r e p o r t an i n c r e a s e i n Government d e p o s i t s by 64,6 millions.
