BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) April 23, 1952 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended April l6t Increases of $234 million in holdings of Treasury bills, $517 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $647 million in demand deposits adjusted, and $280 million in borrowings, and a decrease of $206 million in United States Government deposits. H.4,2 Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans showed minor changes in all districts, resulting in a net increase of $3 million at all reporting member banks. The changes according to industry and purpose are available in another press release. Loans for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities increased $99 million. Real estate loans increased $16 million. Loans to banks decreased $151 million. Holdings of Treasury bills increased $64 million in the Kansas City District, $58 million in the New York District outside of New York City, and $39 million in the San Francisco District*and decreased $39 million in New York City, Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $12 million in the Dallas District and a total of $44 million at all reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury notes and of United States Government bonds decreased $14 million and $26 million, respectively. Demand deposits adjusted increased $191 million in the New York District outside of New York City, $138 million in New York City, $120 million in the Chicago District, $86 million in the Kansas City District, and by smaller amounts in all but two of the other districts. Demand deposits credited to domestic banks increased $131 million. Borrowings increased $242 million in New York City and $37 million in the San Francisco District, but they decreased $51 million in the Chicago District.
