R. 284 For immediate release Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System April 23, 19U6 Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in Leading C i t i e s The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading c i t i e s shows the following principal changes for the week ended April 17* An increase of $361,000,000 in holdings of United States Government obligations; a decrease of $199,000,000 in loans of which $189,000,000 were loans for purchasing or carrying s e c u r i t i e s ; a decrease of $286,000,000 in United States Government deposits; and increases of $1*89,000,000 in demand deposits adjusted and $103,000,000 in deposits credited t o domestic banks. Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and agricultural loans declined $31,000,000 in New York City and $51,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government obligations declined $172,000,000 and other loans for the same purpose declined $21,000,000, both l a r g e l y in New York City* Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased in most of the d i s t r i c t s and the t o t a l i n crease was $133,000,000. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness increased $41,000,000 in New York City, $28,000,000 in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and $94,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks, and declined $26,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t . Holdings of United States Government bonds increased $11*2,000,000 in New York City, $20,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and $150,000,000 at a l l reporting meniber banks. Demand deposits adjusted increased in a l l d i s t r i c t s ; the principal increases were $162,000,000 in New York City, $137,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and $68,000,000 in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t . United States Government deposits declined in a l l d i s t r i c t s . Deposits credited t o domestic banks increased $99,000,000 in Now York City and $103,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks.
