H.l*e2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) April 20, 19l*9 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended April 13: A decrease of $313»000,000 in loans, and increases of $370,000,000 in holdings of United States Government securities, $121,000,000 in balances with banks in the United States, and $1*17,000,000 in demand deposits adjusted, and a decrease of $328,000,000 in United States Government deposits. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans decreased in most districts and a total of $81*, 000,000 at all reporting member banksj the principal decreases were $29,000,000 in New York City and $13,000,000 each in Chicago and in the St. Louis District. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities decreased $200,000,000, largely in New York City. Holdings of Treasury bills increased $177,000,000 in New York City, $31,000,000 in the Chicago District, and $28,000,000 in the San Francisco District; the increase at all reporting member banks was $252,000,000. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $52,000,000 in Chicago and decreased $1*9,000,000 in New York City; the net decrease at all reporting member banks was only $3,000,000, Holdings of United States Government bonds increased $62,000,000 in Chicago, $21,000,000 in New York City, and by smaller amounts in most of the other districts; the increase at all reporting member banks was $12l*,000,000. Demand deposits adjusted increased $362,000,000 in the Chicago District, $57,000,000 in the San Francisco District, $33,000,000 in the Dallas District, and $31,000,000 in the Atlanta District; they decreased $56,000,000 in New York City and $30,000,000 in the Cleveland District.
