FEDERAL statistical Ill RESERVE release For immediate release April 15, 1964 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended April 8: A decrease of $657 million in loans adjusted, an increase of $1,090 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities, decreases of $678 million in reserves with Federal Reserve Banks and $857 million in balances with domestic banks, an increase of $551 million in demand deposits adjusted, decreases of $1,213 million in U. S. Government demand deposits and $554 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks, and an increase of $224 million in time and savings deposits. Commercial and industrial loans decreased in all but one district and a net of $344 million; during the comparable week a year ago these loans decreased $2 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities increased $218 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities decreased $90 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $481 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions decreased $33 million, as compared with a decrease of $114 million and an increase of $11 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1963. Real estate loans increased $27 million. "Other" loans increased $19 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks increased $755 million, Treasury certificates increased $4 million, and the combined total of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds increased $331 million. "Other" securities increased $38 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased $774 million in the City of Chicago and $332 million in the San Francisco District, but they decreased $309 million in New York City, $112 million in the Chicago District outside the City of Chicago, and by lesser amounts in six other districts. Savings deposits decreased $32 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $207 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $120 million and borrowings from others decreased $553 million. Loans to domestic commercial banks decreased $550 million.
