B-502 F e d e r a l Reserve Board September 24, 1931 C0EDI2I0H OF F3DB3AL RESERVE BASES The d a i l y a v e r a g e volume of Federal, r e s e r v e bank c r e d i t o u t s t a n d i n g d u r i n g t h e week ending September 23, as re-oorted by t h e F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks, was $1,297»000,000, an i n c r e a s e of $44,000,000 compared w i t h t h e p r e c e d i n g week and of $298,000,000 compared t i t h vibe c o r r e s p o n d i n g weak i n 1930. On September 23, t o t a l r e s e r v e bank c r e d i t amounted to $1,315,000,000, an i n c r e a s e of $3b, 000,000 f o r t h e week. This i n c r e a s e c o r r e s p o n d s w i t h ar, i n c r e a s e of $77»000,000 in money i n c i r c u l a t i o n and d e c r e a s e s of $11.'J, 000,000 i n monetary gold s t o c k and $19,000,000 i n T r e a s u r y c u r r e n c y , a d j u s t e d , o f f s e t i n p a r t by dec r e a s e s of $138,000,000 i n member bank r e s e r v e b a l a n c e s and $4-0,000,000 i n u n expended c a p i t a l f u n d s , nonmember d e p o s i t s , e t c . The p r i n c i p a l o p e r a t i o n f o r f o r e i g n account was t h e earmarking of $123,000,000 of gold which a c c o u n t s l a r g e l y f o r t h e r e d u c t i o n shown in gold r e s e r v e s . A p a r t of the f u n d s f o r t h i s earmarking o p e r a t i o n was p r o v i d e d by t h e l i q u i d a t i o n of b a n k e r s ' b i l l s held by r e s e r v e banks f o r f o r e i g n account and r e p o r t e d u n d e r "Contingent l i a b i l i t y on b i l l s purchased f o r f o r e i g n c o r r e s p o n d e n t s .
