CONDITION OF FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS.
Continued gain s of $12,300,000 in gold and of $9,900,000 in t o t a l cash
reserve s, accompanied by in creases of $37, 600,000 in deposit l i a b i l i t i e s and of
$31,300,000 in Federal reserve note c ir c u la tio n , are shown in the Federal Reserve
Board’ s w eekly bank statem ent issu ed as at clo se of bu sin ess on October 4, 1922,
Discounted b i l l s show an in crease fo r the week of about $14,000,000, b i l l s increae
purchased in open market - a decrease of $2,700,000, and Government s e c u r itie s anrt
of $31,900,000,
The reserve r a t io , because of the con sid erable in crease in
both d ep o sit and note l i a b i l i t i e s , shows a d e c lin e fo r the week from 78.4 to
7 /.4 per c e n t.
The week w itn essed con siderab le s h iftin g of gold through the settlem en t
fund away from New York, Boston and Clevelan d.
Of the t o t a l decrease of
$35,500,000 shown fo r these three banks, the New York bank alone shows a decrease
of $25,900,000.
S t, Louis rep o rts the la r g e s t accessio n of gold fo r the week,
v i z , , $11,664,000, fo llo w ed b y P h ila d e lp h ia w ith an a ccessio n of over $10, 000, 000.
Smaller in creases in .g o ld reserves a g g re g a tin g $26,100,000 are shown fo r the
remaining seven banks.
Gold reserve s of a l l the reserve banks reached a new
high record t o t a l of $3,089,300,000, a g ain of $214,300,000 sin ce January 1
of the present y e a r , compared w ith a gai& of $669, 800,000 fo r the corresponding
period in 1921.
Holdings of paper secured by G-overnment o b lig a tio n s show an in crease fo r
the week from $139,100,000 to $156,300,000.
Of the to ta l h eld $110*000,000,
or 70,4 per cen t, were secured by L ib e r ty and other U. S. bonds, $4,000,000,
or 2.5 per cen t, by V ic to r y n o te s, $36,500,000, or 23-4 per ce n t, by Treasury
notes and $5,800,000, or 3*7 per cen t, by Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s 4compared w ith
^109, 900#000, $3,700,000, $19, 300,000 and $6,200,000 reported the week before.
