STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS Released for publication Friday morning 1 May 25i not earlier. CONDITION OF FEDERAL RESERVE Bi\NKS St. 3529. Federal Reserve Board, May 24, 1923. Increases of about $3,000,000 in di scoun.ted bills and of $18,100 1000 in Government securities, as against a reduction of $10,800 1 000 in acceptances pur• chased in open market, are shown in the Federal Reserve Board's weekly bank statement issued as at close of business on May 23,. 1923,.· Deposit liabilities declined $7,4oOtOOO and Federal reserve note circulation- $5,300,000, while cash reserves advanced $6,100 .ooo. The reserve ratio, in consequence of these changes, shows a rise from 75.3 to 75.6 per cent. Moderate increases in the holdings of ·discounted paper totaling $25,700,,000 are sho-wn for seven reserve banks, including the New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Kansas City banks, while decreases agg:r;-egating $22 1 700,000 are shown for five other reserve banks, ·mainly for the Boston, Cleveland and Chicago banks. The New York bank reports holdings of $20,600,000 of Treasury certificates, of which $5,000,000 r~resent ~ecial certificates to cover advances to the Government pending collec}tion 't;f fund~? from depositary institutions. Gold reserves show an increase for the week of $5,4oO,OOO and stand at $3,093 t300,000, a. new high total for the system. Since January 3 the increase in the System's gold reserves has been about $43,800,000, compared with an increase of $132,4oo,ooo for the corre~onding period in 1922, The inter-district movement of gold,•, thtoug:h the settlement fund ms been away from New York City, the local reserve banl;c, 'i'tpbrting ·a decrease of $36,700 1 000 in its gold reserves, Smaller reduc-. tions in g~4. reserves 1 totaling $14,600,000 are shown for the Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlan~a, Kansas City and San Francisco banks. Chicago reports an increase in its gold reserves of $19,500,000, Cleveland- an increase of $16•8'00,000, Bostonan increase of $12,900,000 and the three remaining banks an aggregate increase of $7,600,000. Holdings of paper secured by Government obligations increased during the week from $360,200,000 to $366,800 1 000.
