CONDITION OF FEDERAL RESERVE BAMS

The consolidated statement of condition of the Federal reserve banks on
May 21, made public by the Federal Reserve Board, shows increases f o r the week
of $15,800,000 in holdings of b i l l s bought in open market and $400,000 in U. S.
Government s e c u r i t i e s , and a decrease of $500,000 i n b i l l s discounted. Member
bank reserve deposits declined $5,200,000 and Federal reserve note c i r c u l a t i o n
$12,200,000, idiile Government deposits increased $24,300,000. Total b i l l s and
s e c u r i t i e s were $11,600,000 above the amount reported a week ago.
The p r i n c i p a l changes in holdings of discounted b i l l s f o r the week were
decreases of $4,600,000 a t the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, $1,500,000 a t
Boston and $1,000,000 a t New York, and decreases of $2,400,000 a t St. Louis and
$1,000,000 each a t Atlanta and Dallas. The System's holdings of b i l l s hou^it
in open market increased $15,800,000, of Treasury "bills and c e r t i f i c a t e s
$10,200,000 and of Treasury notes $900,000, while holdings of U. S. bonds
declined $10,700,000.
Federal reserve note c i r c u l a t i o n increased $9,000,000 a t the Federal
Reserve Bank of New York and declined $6,400,000 a t Chicago, $5,700,000 a t
Philadelphia, $4,600,000 a t Cleveland, $1,900,000 a t Boston, and $12,200,000
a t a l l Federal reserve "banks.
