Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and
Condition Statement of F.R. Banks

Fo r immediate r e le a s e
March 8 , 1962

The average o f d a ily fig u re s o f t o t a l member bank re se rv e s held during
the week ended March 7 decreased a n e t o f $63 m illio n to $ 1 9 ,4 2 4 m illio n . E s t i ­
mated cu rren cy and co in o f member banks decreased $329 m illio n and t h e i r re se rv e
balances a t th e F e d e ra l Reserve Banks in creased $266 m illio n . E stim ated required
re serv es in creased $19 m illio n ; and estim ated excess re se rv e s decreased $82
m illio n to $440 m illio n . E xcess re se rv e s exceeded member bank borrowings a t the
F e d e ra l Reserve Banks by $350 m illio n , compared w ith th e re v ise d fig u re o f $466
m illion th e week b e fo re .
The p r in c ip a l changes supplying average re se rv e balances w ith F e d e ra l
Reserve Banks were in cre a s e s o f $148 m illio n in F e d e ra l Reserve holdings o f U. S .
Government s e c u r i ti e s and $34 mil l i on in member bank borrowings, and decrease®
o f $69 m illio n in T reasury d ep osits w ith F e d e ra l Reserve Banks and $56 m illio n in
"o th er" F .R . accounts ( n e t ) . The p r in c ip a l o f f s e t t i n g changes were an in cre a se
o f $53 m illio n in cu rren cy in c ir c u la tio n and a decrease o f $18 m illio n in gold
s to c k . T o ta l Reserve Bank c r e d i t in creased $196 m illio n .
As o f Wednesday, March 7 , holdings o f U. S . Government s e c u r i t i e s
bought o u trig h t were $200 m illio n higher than a week e a r l i e r and member bank
borrowings were $273 m illio n h ig h e r. O utright holdings o f b i l l s , n o te s , and bonds
in creased $70 m illio n , $70 m illi on, and $60 m illio n , r e s p e c tiv e ly .
