Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and
Condition Statement of F.R. Banks

For immediate release
Mar. 31, 1966

The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during
the week ended March 30 decreased a net of $228 million to $22,166 million.
Estimated currency and coin of member banks increased $112 million and their
Reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $3^0 million. Estimated
required reserves decreased $13*+ million; and estimated excess reserves decreased
$9^ million to $279 million. Member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks
exceeded excess reserves by $229 million, the same as the revised net borrowed
figure of $229 million the week before.
The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were decreases of $3^+6 million in Federal Reserve float, $9^ million in
member bank borrowings, and $72 million in gold stock,and increases of $73 million
in Treasury cash holdings, $73 million in "other" deposits with Federal Reserve
Banks, and $5^4- million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. The principal offsetting changes were an increase of $194 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright, and decreases of $111 million in currency in circulation
and $69 million in "other" F. R. accounts (net). Total Reserve Bank credit
decreased $277 million.
As of Wednesday, March 30, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought
outright were $3^ million lower than a week earlier and member bank borrowings were
$100 million lower.
