Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and
Condition Statement of F.R. Banks

For immediate release

1962

The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the
week ended February 28 decreased a net of $l4o million to $19,439 million. Estimated
currency and coin of member banks increased $43 million and their reserve balances
at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $183 million. Estimated required reserves de­
creased $87 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $53 million to $480 mil^ ° ai* ®xcess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks
by $424 million, compared with the revised figure of $46l million the week before.
The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Re- - serve Banks were decreases of $315 million in Federal Reserve float and $28 million
in U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement, and increases of
$37 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks and $30 million in for­
eign deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. The principal offsetting change was an
increase of $223 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright. Total Re­
serve Bank credit decreased $135 million.
As of Wednesday, February 28, holdings of U. S.. Government securities
bought outright were $317 million higher than a week earlier and member bank borrow­
ings were $44 million lower. Outright holdings of bills, certificates, notes, and
bonds increased $232 million, $17 million, $44 million, and $24 million, respectively.
