Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and
Condition Statement of F.R. Banks
For immediate release
June 21, 1962
The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during
the week ended June 20 increased $384 million to $20,011 million. Estimated cur­
rency and coin of member banks increased $69 million and their reserve balances
at the Federal Reserve Banks increased $315 million. Estimated required reserves
increased $296 million; and estimated excess reserves increased $88 million to
$470 million. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal
Reserve Banks by $346 million, compared with the revised figure of $335 million
the week before.
The principal changes supplying average reserve balances with Federal
Reserve Banks were increases of $475 million in Federal Reserve float, $77 million
in U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement, and $77 million
in member bank borrowings, and a decrease of $60 million in "other" F.R. accounts
(net). The principal offsetting changes were a decrease of $316 million in U. S.
Government securities bought outright and an increase of $63 million in foreign
deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. Total Reserve Bank credit increased $308
million.
As of Wednesday, June 20, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought
outright were $231 million lower than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities
held under repurchase agreement were $177 million higher, and member bank bor­
rowings were $321 million higher. Outright holdings of bills, certificates, notes,
end bonds decreased $l6l million, $49 million, $l4 million, and $7 million,
respectively.
