CONDITION OF FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS

T.h.e consolidated statement of condition of the Federal reserve banks on July 16,
made public by the Federal Reserve Board, shows a further reduC'.tion of $10,500,000
in aggregate holdings of earning assets, Holdingsof discounted bills d.eclined by
$5,500,000 and of acceptances purchased in open market by $21,100,000, while Government security holdings increased by $16,100,000. Federal reserve note circulation
declined. by $42 1 300,000, while cash reserves increased by $21,100,000 and d.eposit
liabilities by ~65,100,000.

An increase of $6,900,000 in holdings of discounted bills is reported by the
Federal Reserve Bank of New York and nominal increases by the Federal Reserve Bartks
of Philad.elphia, Minneapolis and Dallas. The eight remaining banks report a total
reduction of $15,4oO,OOO, the San Francisco bank showing the largest decline, ·of
$7,200,000, Chicago - a decline of $2,800,000, and RichrrJOnd- a decline of
.
$2,300,000. Paper secured by U. s. Government obligations increased by $2,6oO,OOO
to $97,200,000. Of this amount, $81 ,4oo,ooo was secured by Liberty and other U, s.
bonds, $14,900,000 by Treasury notes, and $1,000,000 by certificates of indebtedness,
Smaller holdings of acceptances purchased in open market.are shown by all Fed~
eral reserve banks except Philadelphia, which reports an increase of $100,000. The
New York and Boston reserve banks report declines of $14,300,000 and $4,6oo,ooo,
respectively, in this item. All reser'le banks participated in the increase of.
$16,100,000 in holdings of Government securities exaept Richrr.ond, which shows no
change for the week. Of the total increase in Government security holdings,
$14,soo,ooo was in Treasury notes and $1,40o,ooo in C'.ertifiC'.a.tes of in(lebtedness,
Holdings of U. s. bonds declined. by $100.;000.
With the emeption of the Kansas City bank which shows an in<\rease of $200,000,
all Federal reserve banks report a smaller volurr1e of Federal reserve notes il;l ci~.
culation, the principal decreases being as follows: Chicago $7,800,000, Cleveland ..
$7 ,600,00Q, San F~ancisco $6 1 500,000, New York $6,000,000, Philadelphia. $4,700,000,
and 'Boston $4.500,000. Gold reserves increased by $17,100,000 during the we~ak, .
Reserves other than gold by $4,000,000, and Non-reserve aash by $2,100,000.
