B a n k s H.4.1 For immediate release December l4, 1961 The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended December 13 increased a net of $1 million to $19,766 million. Estimated currency and coin of member "banks increased $177 million and their reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $176 million. Estimated required reserves decreased $48 million; and estimated excess reserves increased $49 million to $593 million. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $553 million, compared with the revised figure of $509 million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were increases of $360 million in currency in circulation and $31 million in foreign deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. The principal offsetting changes were increases of $60 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright and $84 million in Federal Reserve float, and decreases of $4l million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks and $30 million in "other" deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. Total Reserve Bank credit increased $149 million. As of Wednesday, December 13, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $l44 million lower than a week earlier and member bank borrowing, were $l4 million higher. Outright holdings of bills decreased $205 million; certificates, notes, and bonds increased $7 million, $39 million, and $15 million, respectively.
