RETAIL TRADE IN AUGUST, 1929
Preliminary report
Department s t o r e sales f o r August were 5 per cent l a r g e r than in the corresponding month a year ago, according to preliminary reports made to the Federal
reserve system by 446 s t o r e s .
Increases in t o t a l sales were reported by 288
stores and decreases by 158 s t o r e s .
The change in s a l e s varied considerably f o r d i f f e r e n t p a r t s of the country,
ranging from an increase of 9 per cent in the Boston Federal reserve d i s t r i c t to
a decrease of S per cent in the Minneapolis d i s t r i c t .
Percentage changes in t o t a l s a l e s between August 1928 and August 1929 are
given by d i s t r i c t s in the following t a b l e :
