Preliminary report
P r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s on the value of department s t o r e s a l e s show an i n c r e a s e
from September to October of somewhat -less than the e s t i m a t e d s e a s o n a l amount. The
F e d e r a l Reserve Board* s index, which makes allowance both f o r number of b u s i n e s s
days and f o r u s u a l seasonal changes, was 69 i n October on the "basis of the 1923-I925
average as 100, compared with 70 i n September and 77 i n August.
In comparison w i t h a year ago, t h e value of s a l e s f o r September according to
p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s , was about t h e same. The aggregate f o r t h e f i r s t ten months
of the y e a r was 7 p e r cent smaller than l a s t y e a r .
