R e t a i l Trade in the United S t a t e s in A p r i l , 1928.
Sales of r e t a i l f i r m s i n A p r i l , as i n d i c a t e d by p r e l i m i n a r y r e p o r t s to
the Federal reserve system, were smaller than in A p r i l , 1927. Sales of 505
department s t o r e s were 8 p e r cent smaller than in A p r i l of l a s t year and those
of mail order houses and f i v e - a n d - t e n cent s t o r e s wore a l s o s m a l l e r . The unfavorable comparison with l a s t year r e f l e c t s in considerable p a r t the f a c t that
the number of t r a d i n g days in the month was smaller t h i s year by one day and
t h a t the date of E a s t e r was e a r l i e r in the month.
Department s t o r e s a l e s wore s m a l l e r ' t h a n a year ago in a l l s e c t i o n s of
the country, the l a r g e s t d e c l i n e s being in t h e Boston, P h i l a d e l p h i a , Cleveland,
and Minneapolis d i s t r i c t s , where they amounted to more than 10 p e r c e n t . In
the San Francisco d i s t r i c t s a l e s were only 2 p e r cent l e s s than in A p r i l of
l a s t y e a r , the smallest d e c l i n e f o r any d i s t r i c t .
