1928 - 19 MS HTI - 43 FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD Retail Trade in the United States in June, 1928 •» Retail trade was larger in June than in the corresponding month of l a s t year, according to preliminary reports to the Federal reserve system. Sales of 466 department stores were 2 per cent larger than in June, 1927, and those of mail order houses and of five-and-ten cent. chain stores were larger by 24 per cent and 13 p e r c e n t , respectively# ^ As compared with trade in May of t h j s year, sales of department stores in June continued in about the same volume and those of mail order houses and five-and-ten cent chain stores were l a r g e r . Department store sales were l a r g e r than in June a year ago, in eight Federal resorve d i s t r i c t s and smaller in four d i s t r i c t s — t h e Philadelphia, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Kansas City d i s t r i c t s . The increases .were largest in tlx) Cleveland and Chicago d i s t r i c t s where sales were approximately 5 per cent l a r g e r than in Juno of l a s t yoar. Of the t o t a l number of department stores reporting, 245 showed increases and 220 reported decreases.
