Department s t o r e s a l e s decreased from December to January by l e s s than
the estimated seasonal amount, according to p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s r e p o r t e d to
the Federal Reserve Board, and t h e Board's index of department s t o r e s a l e s ,
which i s a d j u s t e d f o r seasonal v a r i a t i o n , consequently advanced by 6 per
cent f o r t h e month.
In comparison with a year ago, the aggregate value of s a l e s in Janua r y , according to t h e p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s , was 7 per cent s m a l l e r .
