FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD February J, 1933 r&s r t p - For release in morning papers Friday, February 10 DEPARTMENT STORE SALES IN JANUARY, 1933 Preliminary report Preliminary f i g u r e s on the value of department store sales show a decrease from December to January of somewhat more than the estimated seasonal amount. The Federal Reserve Board's index* which makes allowance both f o r number of business days and f o r usual seasonal changes, was 59 i n January on the basis of the I923-I925 average as 100, compared with 62 i n December and 65 i n November. In comparison with a year ago the value of sales f o r January^ according to the preliminary f i g u r e s , was 24 per cent smaller.
