S a l e s of 509 department s t o r e s which reported to the Federal reserve system in January 1928, were about one p e r cent smaller t h a n i n January of l a s t year and i n d i c a t e d a l a r g e r seasonal decline than i s u s u a l between December and J a n u a r y . Smaller s a l e s than a year ago were reported i n the f i v e Federal r e s e r v e d i s t r i c t s along the A t l a n t i c seaboard - Boston, ITow York, P h i l a d e l p h i a , Richmond, and A t l a n t a - and in the Cleveland and Minneapolis d i s t r i c t s . In the o t h e r f i v e d i s t r i c t s , which include most of the middle western and western sections, s a l e s were l a r g e r . Of the t o t a l number of s t o r e s r e p o r t i n g , 277 showed smaller sa.les and 232 reported i n c r e a s e s . Sales of two mail order houses were 6 p e r cent l a r g e r than l a s t year and those of e i g h t f i v o - e n d - t o n - c c n t chain s t o r e s were 8 p e r cent l a r g e r .
