Sales in January, 1927, of 539 department and o t h e r r e t a i l s t o r e s which, made preliminary r e p o r t s t o the Federal reserve system were one p e r cent l a r g e r than in January of l a s t y e a r . Sales increased in seven Federal r e s e r v e d i s t r i c t s and declined in f i v e d i s t r i c t s . With the exception of the P h i l a d e l p h i a d i s t r i c t , where s a l e s were 4 . 4 p e r cent smaller than in January, 1926, s a l e s were l a r g e r in a l l the e a s t e r n d i s t r i c t s and in the Chicago and San Francisco d i s t r i c t s . They wore smaller in the Richmond, S t . Louis, Minneapolis, and D a l l a s d i s t r i c t s , and p r a c t i c a l l y unchanged in the A t l a n t a d i s t r i c t . Of the 539 s t o r e s r e p o r t i n g , 261 showed i n c r e a s e s and 277 r e p o r t e d d e c l i n e s . Seles of two l e a d i n g m a i l - o r d e r houses were 7 per cent smaller in January, 1927 than in the corresponding month of 1926, while s a l e s of 5 r e p o r t i n g f i v e and ten cent chain s t o r e s were 4 . 3 per cent l a r g e r than a year e a r l i e r .
