Total s a l e s i n July of 493 departments and other r e t a i l s t o r e s which made preliminary r e p o r t s to the Federal Reserve System from a l l sections of the country were 5.4 per cent larger than in J u l y , 1925. Increases were general in a l l sections of the country, hut the l a r g e s t , varying from 6.2 per cent to 10.8 per cent, were in the Nov? York, Chicago, S t . Louis, and Dallas Federal reserve d i s t r i c t s . Larger sales than l a s t year occurred a t 330 of the reporting s t o r e s , and smaller sales at 162. Sales of two mail order houses wore 14.6 per cent l a r g e r than in J u l y , 1925, end those of f i v e and ten cent v a r i e t y chain stores (5 chains) were 12 per cent larger than a year ago.
