Preliminary r e t u r n s from r e t a i l f i r m s r e p o r t i n g to the Federal reserve system i n d i c a t e a s l i g h t increase in the volume of r e t a i l s a l e s during the month of March a s compared with a year ego. Sales of 516 department s t o r e s were about t h r e e p e r cent g r e a t e r , while those of e i g h t f i v e - a n d - t e n - c e n t chain store systems increased 14 p e r c e n t . A p a r t of t h i s increase may be a t t r i b u t e d to the f a c t t h a t there were f i v e Saturdays in March of t h i s y e a r , a s compared w i t h four a year ago. Total monthly s a l e s of two r e p o r t i n g mail order houses were 1.5 p e r cent l a r g e r than in March, 1927. The gain in department s t o r e s a l e s was g e n e r a l throughout the United S t a t e s as compared with l a s t March, except in the Boston d i s t r i c t , where t h e r e was a d e c l i n e of about one p e r c e n t . The l a r g e s t i n c r e a s e s in s a l e s occurred in the A t l a n t a , Minneapolis, Chicago, and S t . Louis d i s t r i c t s ; while i n c r e a s e s of l e s s than one p e r cent were reported from the P h i l a d e l p h i a and San Francisco d i s t r i c t s . Stores in the Hew York and Cleveland d i s t r i c t s showed gains of s l i g h t l y more than two p e r c e n t .
