STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS
BANK DEBITS

Board of Governors
of the Federal Reserve System
September 30, 1940

Debits to deposit accounts (except interbank accounts), as reported by banks
in leading cities for the week ended September 25, aggregated $2,097,000,000. Total
debits during the 13 weeks ended September 25 amounted to $101,113,000,000, or 1
percent below the total reported for the corresponding period a year ago. At banks
in New York City there was a decrease of 9 percent compared with the corresponding
period a year ago, while at the other reporting centers there was an increase of
4 percent,
