BANK DEBITS TO DEMAND DEPOSIT ACCOUNTS
Bank debits to demand deposit accounts, except interbank and Government
accounts, as reported by banks in 345 leading centers for the month of August
aggregated #13$ billion. During the past three months debits amounted to $437
billion or 9.4 per cent above the total reported for the corresponding period a
year ago. At banks in New York City there was an increase of 4.9 per cent compared
with the corresponding three-months period a year ago; at 6 other centers the
increase was lU.it per cent; and at all other centers it was 10.8 per cent.
Preliminary estimates of the annual rates of turnover of demand deposits
in August are 32.2 at New York City, 22.9 at the 6 other centers, and 17.8 at all
other centers.
