BANK DEBITS TO DEMAND DEPOSIT ACCOUNTS
Bank debits to demand deposit accounts, except interbank and Government
accounts, as reported by banks in 345 leading centers for the month of October
aggregated $152 billion. During the past three months debits amounted to $454
billion or 5.1 per cent above the total reported for the corresponding period a
year ago. At banks in New York City there was an increase of 12.5 per cent compared
with the corresponding three-months period a year ago; at 6 other centers there was
no change; and at 338 other centers the increase was 1.5 per cent.
Preliminary estimates of the annual rates of turnover of demand deposits
in October are 39.3 at New York City, 23.7 at 6 other centers, and 18.6 at 338
other centers.
