DEBITS

Volume of bu siness, as measured by d e b its to in d iv id u a l accounts, declined
frcm. $8 , 062, 000,000 fo r the week ending May 4, which, included end-of-month pay­
ments, to $7,274,000,000 for the wee’-c ending May 11, the d ecrease amounting to
about 10 per c e n t. Reports o f d e b its to in d iv id u a l accounts are re ce iv e d by
the Federal Reserve Board for banks in about 150 o f the c o u n try ’ s lea d in g c le a r ­
in g house c e n t e r s . Reduced t o t a l s fo r the most recen t week are reported for a l l
the le a d in g c e n te rs, the h e a v ie s t d ecreases being shown for Chicago, where d e b its
were 19 per cent below those fo r the previous week, and for D e t r o i t , where the
decrease amounted to about 29 per c e n t.
As compared w ith the correspending wselt in 1920, d e b i t s fo r the week ending
May 4 were . s c a l i e r by $1,327,000,000, or by about 21 per c e n t . This percentage
i s comparable w ith 15 per cent shown fo r the previou s week and 26 per cent shown
fo r the l a s t wee1: in A p r i l .
