BANK DEBITS

Debits to individual accounts, as reported by hanks in leading c i t i e s fo r the
weak ending March 5, aggregated $10,931,000,000 or $2:, 5 5 3 >000,000 in excess o f the
to ta l o f $2,378,000,000 reported fo r the preceding week. This large increase i s due
in part to the usual heavy end-of-month. payments and in part to the fa c t that the
preceding week contained but fiv e business days. New York City reports an increase
o f $ 1,5 7 5 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 , Chicago - an increase o f $122,000,000, Boston - an increase o f
$107,000,000, and San Francisco - an increase of $101,000,000.

As con-pared with the corresponding period in 1923, debits fo r the week under
review show a decline o f $51,000,000- New York City shows a reduction of
$162,000,000, which is p a rtly o ffs e t by increases in other centers. The principal
increases, $48,000,000 and $39,000,000, resp ectively, are reported by Los Angeles and
Doti’oi t.
Aggregate debits fo r l4 l centers for which figures have been published weekly
since January, 1919, were $10,329,172,000 as compared with $7,335,383,000 fo r the
preceding week and $10,378,951,000 fo r the week ending March 7, 1923.
Debits to individual accounts were reported to the Federal Reserve Board fo r
banks in 255 cen ters, o f which 247 are included in the summary by Federal reserve
d is t r ic ts .
