BANK DEBITS
Debits to individual accounts, as reported by banks in leading cities for the
week ending July 23, aggregated $9,410,000,000 or about 7 P er cent below the total
of $10,114,000,000 reported for the preceding week. New York City reports a'reduction
of $277;000,000, Boston - a reduction of $49,000,000 and Chicago - a reduction of
$45,000,000. An increase of $13,000,000 is reported for Detroit.
As compared with the corresponding week in 1923, debits for the week under review
show an increase of $855, 000,000 or 10 per cent. Most of the important centers report
increases over last year's figures. Increases of $722,000,000 are shown for New York
City, $28,000,000 - for Chicago, and $25,000,000 - for Boston. Pittsburgh reports a
decrease of $30,000,000.
Aggregate debits for l4l centers for which figures have been published weekly
since January, 1919» were about $S,871,000,000 as compared with about $9 >526,000,000
for the preceding week and $8,037,039,000 for the week ending July 25, 192 3*
Debits to individual accounts were reported to the Federal Reserve Board for
banks in 253 centers, of which 24l are included in the summary by Federal reserve
districts.
