BANK DEBITS

Volume of business, as measured by debits to individual accounts reported
to the Federal Reserve Board fo r banks in 153 important clearing house centers,
increased from $6,905,000,000 for the week ending June 29 to $7,592*000,000
for the week ending Ju ly 6, an increase of $657,000,000, or about 10 per cent.
The larger volume of debits for the most recent week, which contained only five
business days, as Ju ly Fourth is a legal holiday in a ll Federal reserve dis
tric ts , is attributable to heavy payments in settlement of accounts for the
month, the quarter, and the fisca l year. A ll leading centers show larger fig
ures for the week.
As compared with the corresponding weeK in 1920, debits for the week ending
July 6 are smaller by $933,060,000, or about 11 per cent. Tnis comparatively
small lag between the figures for corresponding weeks of th is year and of the
past year is apparently due to the fact that June 30 with it s large voluae of
payments was included in the preceding week ending June 30 in 1920 and in the
week 4r.a&pg i'cl y 6 in 1
